RESTORE+ at COP24

At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP24) in Katowice, Poland, RESTORE+ gave a presentation at the Indonesian Pavilion and met with the Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning (Bappenas) on the progress of and next steps for supporting the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024.
During the UN climate conference, RESTORE+ representatives joined a session in the Indonesian Pavilion dealing with “Innovations on Citizen Participation to Support Forest, Landscape and Peatland Restoration” organized by WRI Indonesia. As part of the session, Dr. Florian Kraxner (IIASA) held a presentation on “Gathering Insights from the Crowd for Scientific Assessment of Forest and Landscape Restoration”. He introduced the RESTORE+ approach to citizen-empowered scientific assessment of degradation and restoration and presented the technology developed to engage citizens in the field data collection.

Similar to COP23, RESTORE+ also used the opportunity to hold a dedicated meeting with the Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning, Prof. Dr. Bambang Brodjonegoro. He was accompanied by, among others,  Dr. Arifin Rudiyanto (Deputy Minister for Maritime and Natural Resources) and Dr. Medrilzam (Director for Environmental Affairs). Together with Dr. Florian Kraxner and Ping Yowargana (IIASA), Dr. Valerie Kapos, Head of Climate Change and Biodiversity of UN Environment-World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC) and Barakalla Robyn, Senior Program Lead of World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, represented the RESTORE+ project at this meeting.

In addition to reporting on the progress of the project, the meeting particularly discussed incorporating RESTORE+ insights into the Bappenas led Low Carbon Development Initiative (LCDI) that aims at unprecedented integration of low carbon strategy into the national development plan.
