RESTORE+ presents in IPEA'S Workshop

On 27 March 2018, in Brasilia, IPEA (Institute of Applied Economic Research) organized a workshop that focused on the responsibility of the agricultural sector in Brazil to mitigating climate change.
The workshop was attended by various stakeholders, including chief directors of national agencies such as IBAMA and EMBRAPA; chief directors of private sector associations such as ABIOVE; researchers from universities and research institutes such as USP/ESALQ, Unicamp, PUC-RIO, INPE and IIASA; and observers from the Ministry of Planning, Ministry of Foreigner Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of the Economy and the Staff of the Presidency of the Republic (Casa Civil).

The RESTORE+ team represented by Fernando Ramos, Aline Soterroni and Alexandre Ywata gave presentations on the impacts of implementing the Forest Code in Brazil regarding production versus protection, on the impacts of extending the soy moratorium to the Cerrado biome in terms of avoided native vegetation conversion, and on the importance of improving land use classification tools, respectively.

The Forest Code and the Plan ABC (National Plan for Low Carbon Emission in Agriculture) were presented as the major policies to mitigate climate change in the agricultural sector, which is the second largest GHG emitter within Brazil's emissions budget. The enforcement of the Forest Code is well supported by the sector and some researchers emphasized the importance of the Forest Code as an instrument to promote the technological changes the sector needs toward a more sustainable agriculture.
