Sub-National Consultation Meetings in Indonesia

The RESTORE+ team organized two consultation workshop which took place on 19 and 20 April 2018 in Emilia Hotel (Palembang), on 22 and 23 May 2018 in Midtown Hotel (Samarinda) and on 13 November in Aston Hotel (Samarinda). Relevant stakeholders that were invited to participate in the event included representatives of the provincial government (Forestry Agency, Agriculture Agency, Planning Agency, etc.), representatives of universities and local research institutes, NGOs and companies operating in the region.

The two workshops shared the same structure, but the one in Palembang hosted a more detailed discussion on the crowdsourcing plan. The activity were divided into three parts: a first general panel discussion on the background of the relevant policies for the recovery of landscape function and then two parallel discussion sessions. Both sessions were organized into a presentation part followed by two in-depth break-out sessions. The sessions revolved around two central topics:
  • identifying potential areas where to plan restoration activities (taking into account not only environmental aspects, but also aspects of local community welfare, cultural values, and economic development)
  • evaluating the results of the restoration activities (from the contribution of modelling in planning the activities, to the concrete forms of landscape restoration already achieved).

The April consultation meeting in South Sumatra was followed by further detailed discussions on 15 May with the Palembang R&D Agency for environment and forestry and on 16 May with the South Sumatra Watershed Protection Forum. The roundtables have been tackling the potential design of crowdsourcing activities in the province, addressing two main aspects: 1) the formation of a shared understanding of the benefits and usefulness of crowdsourcing applications for shared database in the implementation of landscape restoration, and 2) how the collection of technical input from South Sumatra stakeholders should be used as a basis for developing detailed plans for power management in the province.
