XXV IUFRO World Congress 2019

A series of well attended RESTORE+ presentations and a dedicated RESTORE+ side-event has been held at the XXV IUFRO World Congress 2019 "Forest Research and Cooperation for Sustainable Development" in Curitiba, Brazil from 29 September - 5 October 2019.
A series of well attended RESTORE+ presentations and a dedicated RESTORE+ side-event has been held at the XXV IUFRO World Congress 2019 "Forest Research and Cooperation for Sustainable Development" in Curitiba, Brazil from 29 September - 5 October 2019.

A large number of RESTORE+ scientists participated in the IUFRO Congress to chair sessions, give technical talks, present posters (see full list of presentations here), and to take part in a dedicated RESTORE+ side-event.
The side-event on “TROPICAL RESTORATION - CAN WE HAVE IT ALL? Trade-offs between production, climate change mitigation and biodiversity” took place on 2nd October 2019. Since restoring deforested and degraded landscape in the tropics is a complex thing, the question whether we can really live up to the Bonn Challenge targets has been addressed. Based on the first RESTORE+ project results, the presenters and audience discussed the challenges and particularly the trade-offs of tropical restoration and possible solutions. Florian Kraxner, chair of the event and scientific coordinator of RESTORE+, explained why RESTORE + and its comprehensive approach to address trade-offs is particularly suited to discuss these issues. “The suite of tools deployed within RESTORE+ form complementary methods that can be used for detailed restoration assessment and planning on all scales - from local to regional, national, and global”, Kraxner explained.

The event started with an introduction to the RESTORE+ project, it’s methodological approach and preliminary results to experts and other representatives of the broader international restoration community, coming together at the occasion of the IUFRO World Congress in Curitiba. Insights were shared through presentations by the RESTORE+ consortium partners for the focus regions, Indonesia, Brazil, and Congo Basin, connecting their experiences to a wider perspective on benefits and trade-offs in tropical restoration. Michael Kleine, IUFRO Deputy Executive Director, complemented these insights with lessons learned from forest landscape restoration implementation efforts on the ground in other Bonn Challenge regions including Latin America and Africa.

In the second part of the event, many experienced and interested experts from the various tropical regions participating in the side-event, engaged with the RESTORE+ team in a lively discussion on benefits and challenges of tropical restoration.
As an example, one of the key messages to take forward from this event with respect to the RESTORE+ assessment in Brazil is the importance to pay specific attention to small scale farmers. "The Brazilian team’s modeling results clearly indicate a great benefit of a large-scale restoration program for small farmers. This program together with the Forest Code would trigger a potential of about 30 million hectares of native vegetation restoration, whereas the rigorous enforcement of the Forest Code alone would result in a native vegetation gain of 12 million hectares by 2050. In terms of emissions, the large-scale restoration program for small farmers could make Brazil a carbon sink regarding the land-use change and forestry sector by 2035 onwards. Hence, special attention needs to be paid to incentivizing for voluntary restoration by small scale farmers." said Marluce Scarabello (INPE).

Particularly, the RESTORE+ methodology and interim results received special attention as well as potential trade-offs in terms of data, methods and other possible requirements for successful implementation of restoration activities.
