RESTORE+ Annual Consortium Meeting

The RESTORE+ project consortium partners held the first virtual RESTORE+ Annual Consortium Meeting. Status quo updates and discussions took place in several online sessions throughout June and July.

Starting with a joint get-together session on 8th June 2021, project members came together to share general updates on the status of their teams and the Impact of COVID-19 on their activities and look at the years ahead in the project. Coming closer to the project end, dissemination of project results and presentations of insights at various events were some of the topics to be addressed with all project members.

On the next two days, June 15th and 16th, the meeting focused on project activities in Indonesia. Project partners from ICRAF together with IIASA presented a general overview of the ongoing activities in Indonesia.

The overview started with a presentation on the land cover mapping activities that have been informed by the data collected through several crowdsourcing campaigns carried out with WRI and WWF and the process that led to the currently ongoing mapping and assessment of restoration potential.

The outcomes of these activities will serve to inform Indonesian stakeholders and also feed into the upcoming visualization tool accessible from the project website.

Further updates were provided on the modelling of tree and annual crops as restoration options as well as on the spatial calibration of GLOBIOM-Indonesia. The first day was concluded with the presentation on six restoration scenarios (Baseline, Existing policies, Land swapping, Full enforcement of existing land designation, Agroforestry and Value of restoration) for Indonesia and the status quo on the biodiversity impact assessment, presented by WCMC. The following discussion of elements that still need inputs and contribution from other partners provided an opportunity to define the workflows for the remaining part of the project.

The second day of the meeting on Indonesia focused on the policies, ex-post analysis and financial mechanisms for restoration in Indonesia, coordinated by project partner MCC, executed together with EDF. Presentations on these activities included an overview of Indonesia’s restoration policies to meet its restoration target, an ex-post analysis of policies, focusing on spill-over effect of palm oil expansion, price-elasticities of deforestation, and evaluation of the Social Forestry Program as well as innovative financial mechanisms for restoration.

A month later, on 14th and 15th July, the meeting with regional focus on Brazil took place. Similarly, the RESTORE+ team from INPE in Brazil gave an overview of the ongoing activities and results achieved so far. This included the trade-off assessment and economic outcomes of GLOBIOM-Brazil's native vegetation restoration scenarios as well as the insights of the potential impact of native vegetation restoration on carbon stocks and biodiversity and the illegaly deforested areas available for restoration in the Amazon.
One of the outcomes of the project activities in Brazil is a web-based analytical and visualization tool of which a first version and its functionalities were presented.

The second part of presentation focused on the biodiversity components coordinated by WCMC, including the biodiversity modelling assessment for the Forest Code Scenarios, the species habitat change and the biodiversity intactness Index (BII).

The last day of the RESTORE+ annual meeting in 2021 started with an overview of Brazil’s restoration policies to achieve its restoration target by MCC. Further, insights were shared by LSE on the opportunity-cost modelling of restoration activities in Mato Grosso and a presentation was given by EDF on market-based mechanisms and innovative financial mechanisms for restoration in Mato Grosso.
