In November 2019, RESTORE+ launched a national campaign to identify landscape restoration potential by using the tailor-made crowdsourcing platform Urundata, built by the project consortium. The launching workshop was followed by expert consultation meetings in the following days that identified the need for intensive expert exchange in classifying the country’s heterogeneous landscapes through visual interpretation of satellite-based and other auxiliary data.

The exchange took place in the form of a Mapathon in June, during which the project consortium introduced the tools that were developed by the project for visual interpretation of satellite data and their usage in automated land cover mapping. The exchange was initially planned to be conducted in March, but then postponed due to the COVID-19 development. Despite the online format, mapping experts operating from different parts of the country were able to share their valuable knowledge through the web-based tools that can also be used for their daily mapping activities later on.

Results from the Mapathon will be used to complement visual interpretations from the national crowdsourcing campaign. Both will be used as reference data in assessing the restoration potential of the archipelago.

Documentation of the workshop resulted in 14 Google Earth Engine tutorial that can be accessed from the Urundata Youtube channel.
