Capacity building training in Indonesia

RESTORE+ aims to inform key policies in Indonesia by identifying specific degraded areas with accompanying scenarios for restoration and sustainable utilization. To this end, working together with policy makers is required to ensure relevance and to better position the project in informing national policies such as the National Medium-Term Economic Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024.

Providing evidence-based policy assessment to the formulation of the country’s next RPJMN 2020-2024 requires two-way engagement between science and policy stakeholders in Indonesia. To initiate this process within the scope of the RESTORE+ project, a series of joint capacity building activities will be conducted to establish a common understanding of the challenges faced as well as the tools and information needed to provide evidence-based policy options. Such an understanding will allow close collaboration throughout the assessment process which is key for shared ownership of results.

The first joint capacity building activity took place on 22-25 August 2017 in Bogor, Indonesia. Dr. Medrilzam (Director for Environmental Affairs) and Mr. Muhammad Nassir, M. Si (Director of Human Resources) from the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS) opened the event which introduced IIASA's Global Biosphere Management Model (GLOBIOM) as well as relevant GIS analytical tools to government officials of the ministry and other experts of the field. The introduction covered the model structure as well as required input parameters, spatial data and maps. More capacity building and collaborative modelling activities are envisioned, particularly to inform the Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS) of the RPJMN. The next activity is already planned to take place in early December 2017.
