RESTORE+ participates in the 2017 Bonn Challenge Meeting

The Bonn Challenge is a global effort to bring 150 million hectares of degraded and deforested land into restoration by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. This initiative underpined Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) to restore degraded land to its ecological functionality as well as enhancing human well-being.

IIASA, ICRAF and WRI represented RESTORE+ consortium to take part in Asia Bonn Challenge High-Level Roundtable Meeting. This initiative encouraged national commitment and pledge that bring concrete restoration implementation to the ground to national priority. The Asia Bonn Challenge High-Level Roundtable Meeting aimed to identify ways to collaborate on forest landscape restoration in support of the Bonn Challenge.
The Governor of South Sumatra, Mr. Alex Noerdin highlighted the ecosystem restoration work of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Green Growth Programme of South Sumatra and the CSR activities of companies working in the province. RESTORE+ consortium partners, ICRAF and WRI, are active in supporting the South Sumatran provincial government to formulate strategies for ecosystem restoration activities in the province.
RESTORE+ coordinator for activities in Indonesia, Dr. Sonya Dewi from ICRAF presented their experience in South Sumatra on 10 May 2017 in the Focus on South Sumatra and Indonesia forum. South Sumatra is a pilot province of the RESTORE+ project where detailed field data gathering will inform national assessment on FLR scenarios. RESTORE+ contributes to the Bonn Challenge by enhancing land use planning capacity for effective FLR planning to achieve multiple goals of environmental and social benefits.
The meeting was hosted by South Sumatra provincial government with high level attendance from, among others, Dr. Siti Nurbaya, Minister of Environment and Forestry, Indonesia, Mr. Jochen Flasbarth, State Secretary of Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, Germany, and Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, IUCN President.
