RESTORE+ received Bappenas delegation at IIASA

From 19-20 February 2019 a high level delegation from the Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), visited IIASA for a two-day meeting, focused on RESTORE+ contribution to the formulation of National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024.
The representatives from the Bappenas, including the Director Food and Agriculture, Mr. Anang Noegroho and the Director for Environment, Dr. Medrilzam, were welcomed by IIASA Director General and CEO Albert van Jaarsveld. Dr. van Jarsfeld also introduced IIASA and its research collaborations in Indonesia to the delegation.

The objective of the meeting is to expand current interaction with the ministry’s Environment Directorate to also inform policy concerns related to food and agriculture production. During the two days the delegation was introduced to the RESTORE+ project modelling approach and preliminary results focusing on agriculture commodities. To plan a detailed collaboration towards finalization of technical recommendations to the RPJMN in mid-April this year, the meeting also provided a technical overview of the various modelling approaches applied by IIASA and RESTORE+ partners. In addition to EPIC’s approach to modelling of annual crops, the biogeochemical and forest growth modelling with BGC-MAN and G4M model were presented, as well as IIASA's Global Biospheric Management (GLOBIOM) model, with special focus on the Indonesian version implemented for the RESTORE+ project. The WaNuLCAS model for tree crops was presented by ICRAF Indonesia.

Bappenas’ Food and Agriculture Directorate welcomed the potential contribution of RESTORE+ to the directorate’s formulation of the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024. In order to ensure appropriate incorporation of food and agricultural production, requirements for information exchange and refinements were discussed. The meeting resulted in a common understanding of relevant next steps to enhance the relevance of RESTORE+ modeling results and policy recommendations.
